How To Make Iced Coffee

By Mike Chronos

As the weather warms up, the drinks cool down. Many people still want to enjoy their coffee, but not when it is piping hot on an already hot day. So, it makes perfect sense to make the seasonal switch to iced coffee. Iced coffee can be quite refreshing on a warm day.

To make the perfect iced coffee, begin by brewing your coffee hot. Always use fresh coffee beans and wait to grind them until just before use. Brew the coffee stronger than usual because once ice is added, the coffee will become diluted. Strength of the coffee is affected by the amount of ground coffee brewed per cup of water. If you wish to add sugar or powdered creamer, do so while the coffee is hot. One will find that the granules of these products will be more easily dissolved in the hot liquid, before the coffee cools down. Following this, one should pour the coffee into a coffee carafe. Allow coffee to cool down to room temperature, this takes about an hour. Next, transfer the coffee in the carafe to the refrigerator and allow two hours for the coffee to become completely chilled. Then, fill a glass with ice and pour chilled coffee over the top. This would be the time to add milk or cream in liquid form, as desired. Mix the contents well and enjoy.

A different hot brewed method is to make a blended iced coffee. In order to do this, combine crushed ice in a blender; combine with one cup of coffee which has been freshly brewed then top with cup of milk. Blend contents in blender until large ice pieces are blended thoroughly. At this point in time, add some sugar to taste. Or, if preferred, add flavored creamers or flavoring syrups. Continue blending ingredients.

Cold brewed iced coffee can also be prepared. Iced coffee brewed in this way will have 67% less acidity than hot brewed coffee. This brewing method involves one pound of coarsely ground coffee, and most prefer the taste of a darker, full bodied roast when using this method. Fill a pitcher with nine cups of cold water. Allow this to steep in a cool place for a minimum of twelve hours. Separate coffee grounds from water by scooping them off of the top or placing a coffee filter in a sieve and pouring the liquid through. The remaining mixture is a concentrated coffee. Pour one part of this mixture into a glass with three parts chilled milk or water. Add sugar or desired flavoring.

Now your ice coffee is prepared, and it can be flavored any way. Besides the sugar and cream, an assortment of flavored syrups can be mixed into the coffee. For people who prefer their coffee black, taste different coffee bean varieties to mix it up once in awhile.
