Five Great Foods for Off-Campus College Students

By Rick Burgess

There are two things that hold true of virtually all college students: they are always on the go and they never have enough money. College students who live off-campus have the added challenge of needing to eat well, inexpensively and quickly. Here are five must-have foods for every off-campus apartment.

The first one is pasta, which is a staple in virtually every American kitchen. Pasta can be eaten with practically nothing on top of it, or can easily be dressed to the hilt for an elaborate meal. Dressed up or dressed down, pasta is a favorite. And it cooks as quickly, and easily, as boiling water.

Eggs are a perfect food for college students. Eggs can be eaten them scrambled or fried, but you can do a lot more that that with an egg. Serve them with sauteed vegetables, cheese, meats, breads and so much more. Eggs are so much more than just a breakfast food.

In addition, potatoes should be in college students' kitchens. Potatoes are a starch that can be cooked in many different ways and tastes good with a lot of cuisines. They are easy to cook in a microwave, and topped with tomato sauce (or salsa) and cheese it becomes a fast and tasty meal. Add some hard-boiled eggs and peas to potato salad, and turn this side dish into a one-dish meal.

Most of us would never consider eating onions alone, but it just might be the most common ingredients used in cooking, and is a must have in the kitchen. Raw, the onion can be put on a sandwich or a salad. It can be cooked in many different ways and can be part of dishes from soups, sauces, pastas, potatoes, stews, stir-fry etc. Many believe onions contain anti-cancer agents. Onions add just a bit of excitement to a dish.

Last on the must have list is tomato sauce or canned tomatoes. They can be incorporated into other dishes or eaten with pasta, potatoes and even eggs.

There are so many ways to use the foods on this list. Eat these foods in combination with each other or in combination with some of your other favorite foods. These foods are nutritious, delicious and budget friendly.
