Apple Crumble: A Little Story

By Dave Brown

I live for food and I love preparing and taking time master recipes. My favourite food is apple crumble and I have created a website dedicated it and all things crumble. The time to eat apple crumble after you have eaten a big roast on a cold Sunday afternoon, you've been for a long walk in the cold and you know that waiting for you after your dinner is the perfect pudding.

My biggest concern when it comes to pudding is whether to have ice cream or custard. My mum uses 'Birds' custard, which is a classic recipe, and one I have grown up with but my new favourite is the ambrosia cream custard.

Now did you know that apple crumble was first created back in the Second World War? It was used as strict rationing was brought in. The normal ingredients used in a pie weren't available; these included flour sugar and fat! So people used a simple mixture of margarine, sugar and flour.

Anyway, back to me and the food I love. There are many different type of crumble out there, Rhubarb crumble, Raspberry and Pear crumble. There is always the issue of what sugary goodness to have with it.

I find that vanilla ice cream is great with Rhubarb crumble but the crumble has to be really quite hot. If you let it cool down too much you won't get the tasty melted ice cream mixed in with the rhubarb. I still haven't understood why you get that film on your teeth after eating rhubarb. Maybe it was just because it was out of mums garden!?

So, that's the story of apple crumble. I hope you have learnt something new - who would have thought desserts could be so interesting. If you would like to view a lovely apple crumble recipe follow the link below.
