Thoughts on Brewing a Great Cup of Coffee

By Kathy Kimmel

Coffee is a must-have drink for many people. For some people, a good cup of coffee is both ritual and religion. There are people who would rather go without coffee than to drink a cup of coffee that was brewed with inferior beans, bad tasting water, or in a poor coffee pot. Some people might think that the manufacturer of the coffee is what makes the difference in a good cup of coffee. Certainly certain manufacturers use different methods of processing coffee to be enjoyed at home. However, there are a lot more factors that go into making a good cup of coffee. Here are some considerations to think about, when it comes to making a great cup of coffee.

Using fresh beans: The coffee bean is where the magic starts. You can brew your coffee in the most expensive, most advanced coffee maker but if you are using stale or inferior beans, your pot of coffee will taste horrible. Having said this, you need to make sure that you are purchasing whole coffee beans from the freshest sources, or that your coffee bean grounds are being produced from beans that are kept as fresh as possible.

Bean grinding: Typically, there are several different grinds that a machine will render for a coffee bean. There are course grinds, espresso grinds, and standard drip grinds. There are also fine grinds as well. The more fine of a grind that the bean gets, then more of the oils from the bean and the essence of the bean gets released. However, a fine grind will also require a fine filter. The feel of the coffee on the palate can be affected by the grind as well.

Water is a major factor when you need to brew a top pot of coffee that tastes great. When your water ends up tasting like chemicals or minerals then said taste of your coffee will be poor. You may even end up with coffee that is incredibly acidic or just tastes quite strange. Those that can be considered a coffee purist might wish to solely brew their java with purified or filtered water. Through doing this, the best water is provided so that you can brew your coffee beans effectively. Who would want impure water ruining the taste of excellent coffee beans?

Using a good and clean coffee maker: Many people continuously brew coffee, not giving head or thought about the cleanliness of the coffee. While it's true that the water is heated up to boiling level in order to brew the beans, the coffee bean grounds leave oil deposits, and stains. Not only this, but tap water will leave lime or calcium deposits in the brewing compartment of the coffee maker. This compromises the taste of the final pot of coffee. A coffee maker can be cleaned very easily and in a non-toxic way by running some vinegar and water through the coffee maker. Vinegar will eliminate lime and calcium deposits.

You will discover that there are all manner of different filters with each designed to deal with the particular grounds purchased or produced. There are quite a number of wide filters for the traditional drip coffee makers. You can find small cone paper filers along with metal filters which you can use over and over again. Commonly, the consumer will select the particular filter depending on needs. Yet, a reusable filter or a paper filter produced from unbleached paper can do a tremendous job making sure the coffee's taste is top of the line.

When it comes to drinking a great cup of coffee, don't settle for the old, out of the pot, that's been sitting for hours coffee made with crummy pre-ground coffee. Buy great coffee beans, grind them yourself, use filtered water, and be sure to clean that coffeemaker.
