Many homes enjoy the versatility which basil pesto sauce offers. This flavorful creation can be paired with nearly any dish such as fish, chicken, pasta, and many others. The health benefits the fresh herbs in this sauce make it an added reason to have a recipe handy for use.

In general there are seven ingredients which are used to make it, these include fresh basil, olive oil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, as well as a dash of salt and pepper. Any of these ingredients can be replaced or the recipe added to in order to create a taste that matches the dish being prepared. While it is acceptable to alter the recipe, there is one thing which cannot be left out, it is the fresh herbs.

An important part to the preparation lays in the way that the herbs are prepared. Pesto is an Italian word which is derived from a root that means bruise or pound. To get the best flavor and aroma from the herbs it is advisable to use a mortar and pestle. Some people prefer to use mechanical means such as a blender or processor, but do not receive as good results.

Since the recipe requires the use of fresh herbs, the option is to freeze it. To accomplish this, it is important not to add the cheese prior to freezing because cheese does not freeze well. Instead, place it into ice cube holders prior to adding cheese, let it freeze then place into freezer bags. When ready to be used, place the cheese into the dish at that time.

With a simple base to the recipe, it is easy to add or replace items to subtly alter the flavor. Pine nuts can easily be replaced with walnuts. Romano cheese can add a zesty taste in contrast to the usual Parmesan cheese. Give in to the creative chef and experiment with different combinations.
