A Short Review On How To Use Kitchen Knives

By Melinda Gene

There are simple reasons that a knife is designed the way it is. Some of them are made to be a multi-purpose knife but for the most part, they are used to do specific cutting tasks that are done around the kitchen. When you learn how and when to use your kitchen knives, you will soon discover that they are made to be for a specific task or a specific kind of food. They make it easier to go through bone or slice a vegetable but some cannot do more than one task.

The most commonly used kitchen knife is known as a chefs knife. This type of knife does not usually have a serrated blade and can be found in many different sizes. The reason for the many sizes is simple; it is to find one that comfortably fits in your hand. This is often used for many different tasks around the kitchen and is really to have around.

Another common knife that can be found in many kitchens is the pairing knife. This type of knife can be used to cut cooked or raw food and is especially known to be able to peel a vegetable or fruit with ease. They are usually a smaller knife so that you get the optimum control.

A fillet knife should be used to fillet any type of meat, especially fish. The blade is designed to be long and very sharp and comes in a couple different sizes. Because of the design of the blade, it can become dull in just a few uses. It is important to keep the blade very sharp and covered when not in use. No other type of knife can fillet meats as well as this type and many of them come with a protective sheath and a blade sharpener.

A knife with a serrated blade is designed with cutting meat in mind. Many times, steak knives have a serrated blade and they can also be used for cutting tough vegetables as well. If you like bread with a hard crust, a blade with a serrated edge will help you cut through the crust.

A butter knife is the dullest of all kitchen knives. There is not much need to have a sharp blade to spread jellies, butter or other spreads so they are usually dull and have a few fine teeth on them. These knives are not used for much else in a kitchen.

Working with meats can be difficult without the use of a cleaver. This large knife is used to be able to chop through bones and is great when it comes to cutting a whole chicken as well. Cleavers have such large blades that they are typically used for crushing garlic and other spices.

For more information about kitchen knives, do a little more research on the subject. The more you know about the uses of different types of knives, the easier your work in the kitchen will be.
