Reusing K-Cups Saves Money and Plastic

By Frank Stinkle

If you are a coffee lover, then chances are you already know about Keurig K-Cups. These convenient single serving cups are an easy way to make a cup of coffee; much easier than trying to make just one cup using a regular coffeemaker. The many flavors of K-Cups available have made them a favorite with coffee drinkers, since they make it easy to have exactly the cup of coffee you want. Suppose you would like a cup of flavored coffee while your friends or family take their coffee plain, it is easy to do this with K-Cups. Coffee lovers also enjoy that their K-Cups are always fresh, since the coffee never sits in the coffeepot for a longtime.

Keurig K-Cups are used with single cup Keurig coffeemakers to produce single cups of coffee. The makers and K-Cups are both available online as well as at groceries and other retail stores. You may even find K-Cups for sale at coffee shops, so if your favorite coffee shop does this, you can enjoy single, fresh cups of their coffee at home any time you like.

Even with all the great things about K-Cups, they also have one problem; making single cups of coffee in disposable cups wastes plastic. There are ways to reduce the waste, such as using permanent filters that you fill with your own ground coffee or using special reusable caps with an old K-cup. They are not as convenient as using the prepackaged K-cups but they save money and plastic. You simply empty the coffee grounds when done, rinse out the cup, refill, recap the cup and you are ready to reuse your cup.

You do not have to throw out the coffee grounds either (although they are biodegradable). Coffee grounds make great fertilizer for plants, so you can put them in your compost heap if you have one. You can also add coffee grounds to the soil for your houseplants. You can also use your used K-Cups as pots for seedlings or small plants for your garden or inside your home once you have reused them several times to make coffee.

You can also use your empty K-Cups as paint pots for art projects, especially for children. You can easily rinse them out after use and store them with your other craft supplies. They also make good containers for the garage or workshop, since their size makes them ideal for storing small items.

Another reason to reuse Keurig K-Cups is that it will save you money. Each cup costs around 55 cents which adds up over time. When you reuse them you can get your favorite coffee, and refill the cups. You will still have the convenience of brewing a single cup at a time, and you will be able to get the coffee at a better price.

Keurig K-Cups are the most convenient way to enjoy coffee. They ensure that your coffee is always fresh and you can brew a different kind of coffee every time if you like. While single disposable cups can create a lot of waste, you can cut down on the waste by reusing your cups and finding new purposes for your used K-Cups. So, save money and enjoy your coffee in a more environmentally friendly way.
