The Big Three Coffee Retailers

By Dave Lashier

If you love coffee as much as I do then I am willing to bet you have had coffee at one of these coffee shops over the past month or so! While drinking a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop I performed some brief research online to discover who were the top retail coffee shops in the United States - and the results are Starbucks, Tim Horton's, Caribou Coffee, and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. If my research is correct Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has a total of 213 locations, Tim Horton's has 292 locations, Caribou Coffee with a total of 322 locations, and of course Starbucks - are you sitting down? - with a total 8,000 U.S. locations! Wow!

In some towns there are more Starbucks than there are gas stations (just kidding). But seriously, it seems as if every street corner there is a Starbucks just waiting to take our coffee dollar! This shows how gigantic Starbucks really is, especially if we take into consideration the fact that Seattle's Best, that has 160 locations in the United States, is actually a Starbuck's subsidiary. The next largest group of retail coffee shops not part of the above mentioned top four are Coffee Beanery, Port City Java, Dunn Brothers Coffee, and lastly Peet's Coffee. Of course each area of the country has one or three regional retail coffee establishments that hold the loyalty of the area residents.

It was 1971 when the first Starbucks coffee shop opened its doors. Opening their doors at Pike Place Market in Seattle Washington Starbucks was able to capture the hearts of coffee enthusiasts by offering fresh roasted and ground coffee from the very finest coffee beans available from around the world. If you were to ask a Starbucks employee what their company mission is here is the answer you will likely receive: to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Nowadays, Starbucks has 15,000 selling units in 50 countries all over the world. And if that was not enough, Starbucks also happens to be the world's leading coffee roaster as well as retailer of premium specialty coffee.

With Starbucks firmly planted in the number one spot who comes in at second? No surprise here! With locations primarily located in the Midwest and eastern parts of the United States Caribou Coffee has coffee shops located in 15 states. They are certainly a key competitor to the Starbucks brand in those areas where Caribou Coffee Shops are found. The company, which was founded in 1990, has been serving delicious coffee drinks for over 21 years!

I have never been to this place and maybe I should stop in and see what the excitement is all about! After all there is more to coffee than just Starbucks, right?! , Tim Horton's offers coffee and donuts in different locations all over United States and Canada, as well. It was 1964 when Tim Horton's first opened their doors for business. They are primarily focused on serving their customers with top quality coffee and offering daily fresh products that satisfy their loyal customers. So the nxt time I am in Canada I think I will seek out a Tim Horton's and check out the place and taste their delicious brew!

Here in Hawaii these folks are relatively new. They started to open shops within the local grocery store "Foodland", and thus far they have been a big hit here in the islands. With a focus on selling coffee products, premium coffee drinks and rare teas coffee bean and tea leaf is a family company that is growing and expanding to become a direct competitor with Starbucks. Founded in 1963 Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is a company that is almost 50 years old.

No matter which of the above mentioned coffee chains serves your favorite coffee, there is one thing that all coffee roasters and coffee fans have in common - passion. Whether Starbucks is your favorite coffee-shop retailer or Tim Horton's you cannot go wrong by visiting either of these coffee shops in your pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee. I am fairly certain one of the above mentioned four coffee shop retailers will be just around the corner from your home or office. Enjoy!
