Cooking Tips for Raising a Gluten Free Family

By Marcus Glover

Free time isn't free anymore. Trying to schedule time for cooking these days seems out of reach. The days of great homemade meals that mom use to make are mere memories. Between work, sports practices, dropping off kids for after school activities and running errands, who has time for cooking. Many families resort to fast food or convenience foods because of lack of time. However, most convenience foods contain gluten and a lot of restaurants are still not up to speed on separating their kitchens for gluten allergies nor do they have many gluten free food ideas.

Thank goodness there's an answer. What was once a staple in many kitchens is now making a return - The Pressure Cooker. The convenience of cooking soups, stews and other meals fast and still having a great taste is one of the major reasons you see more and more of the pressure cookers being sold these days. The newer models available today are much better than those of an older generation. The pressure cooker allows families to have gluten free meals that taste good and are quick to cook. Allowing everyone to have more time in the evening for other activities.

One stumbling block for several people in cooking gluten free meals in a pressure cooker is not being familiar with it. You can easily get over the fear of not knowing how to cook with a pressure cooker just by watching a few videos online at several websites providing tips. Not all are going to have gluten free recipes or gluten free food ideas, but you can substitute ingredients where necessary in the recipes they provide. One cook that has a great assortment of recipes for the pressure cooker is Lorna Sass.

One recipe book she wrote is "Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure". The book provides insight on how to buy, clean and use a pressure cooker. You'll learn that using a pressure cooker for your gluten free meals can save you a lot time, with most meals taking a third the time to cook.

Using a pressure cooker melts beans into a rich, hearty soup without the addition of any oil. Her herbed lima bean soup comes out tasting like a cream soup if the beans are soaked overnight and the skins rubbed off before cooking. The pressure cooker risotto dishes are as creamy as stove top risotto without the extended time standing over a hot stove cooking. And you certainly haven't lived until you've had hot, chunky applesauce topped with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream for dessert... and it only takes ten minutes to cook.

The many cookbooks available for learning how to use a pressure cooker can help create great gluten free food ideas for you and the family. The recipe ideas can help save hours in the kitchen and keep you and your family away from the fast food places, allowing you to maintain a healthier lifestyle and avoiding gluten. Just make sure to substitute gluten for gluten free where applicable.

It can be difficult to cook for a gluten free family, but with options such as a pressure cooker and searching several recipe books you can create a meal the whole family loves that doesn't take hours to prepare. Obviously, you won't want to cook with it every night ( or maybe you will after you try it out for the first time ) but you can use it a few times a week during the weekdays when you have the busy schedules to save a lot of time.

Finding gluten free meals everyone in your family likes can be difficult. Finding meals to prepare that are fast and easy can be even more difficult. Using a pressure cooker just might be the answer for you.
