Folgers has always told us that the best part of waking up involves your morning cup of coffee. Some people believe that they need this cup in order to get through the day. People really do rely on their morning coffee to jumpstart things and get going for work! The brewed beverage has become quite popular over the years with the expansion of coffee companies like Starbucks, but in either case, it is one of the most popular beverages in our country. It is certainly one of the most consumed beverages in the world.

Coffee's country of origin is Ethiopia. The energizing effect of the coffee bean plant is said to have been discovered in the northeast region of Ethiopia. The cultivation of coffee first expanded in the Arab world. It spread all throughout Asia, Europe and East Africa. It's a very important export commodity. In 2004 coffee was the top agricultural export for twelve countries, and by 2005 it was the world's seventh-largest legal agricultural export by value.

When it comes to the art of roasting coffee, there are about four main categories. A lot of processing goes into the whole coffee bean process of roasting. Light roast, medium roast, dark roast and French roast are the different stages in which coffee can be roasted. Light roasted coffee beans are what you often find at your local coffee house or fast food outlet. The beans are roasted for about seven minutes so the exterior of light roasted beans remain dull producing a sour cup of coffee. A medium roast involves a nine to eleven minute roast. The coffee ends up being slight brown and produces a regular breakfast coffee. With dark roast the coffee beans are processed between 12 & 13 minutes. From dark roast comes sweet Italian espresso beans and Vienna roast.

The darkest form of roasted coffee is French roast. Coffee beans are roasted up to the limit before turning into ashes, which causes the beans to lose their original qualities, and the flavor ends up being very strong. Roasting can change the physical as well as chemical properties of coffee beans. However, the caffeine and nutrients contained in unroasted beans remains the same even after undergoing the roasting process.
