Are There Any Health Benefits to Drinking Coffee?

By Ray Marsh

There have been quite a few studies devoted to the potential health benefits drinking coffee provides. Drinking coffee late at night can have a negative impact on your quality of sleep.

It is no big secret that coffee is commonly used as a stimulant. People drink coffee to make them feel more alert, focused, and awake. It is widely used after a restless nights' sleep. However, in susceptible people, coffee can overstimulate the nervous system. This can cause anxiety symptoms as well as signs of irritability in some people. A further reduction in the ability to handle stress makes the anxiety symptoms stand out even more. More health problems may be discovered, with consistent overstimulation, through the exhaustion of the adrenal glands.

Drinking coffee has also been directly linked to a reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that patients who drink a couple of cups of coffee each day could actually be reducing their risk of developing diabetes by up to 50% compared to people who don't drink it at all. It's thought that caffeine can actually decrease insulin sensitivity in patients.

Cirrhosis of the liver is found fewer times in in coffee drinkers than in most others. Cirrhosis occurs in people suffering from chronic liver disease and is when the normally healthy liver tissue begins to be replaced by fibrosis and nodules. These nodules typically stop liver functionality completely over time. People who drink coffee could benefit from caffeine's strong anti-fibrotic qualities. Caffeine has also been positively linked to a lowered risk of liver cancer, which is a cancer that often occurs in patients already diagnosed with cirrhosis.

It is a commonly held belief that caffeine raises the risk of high blood pressure but no formal studies have come to that conclusion. For people who drink too much coffee, anxiety or irritability is a common side effect. If a susceptible person drinks too much coffee, it's possible that the caffeine could decrease that person's resistance to stress. Stress and anxiety are suddenly felt over little things that normally wouldn't bother people. Symptoms of stress in this situation may include irregular heartbeat, higher blood pressure, or an increased heart rate. This is especially common among heavy coffee drinkers.

In conclusion you aren't likely to see any harmful effects from moderate consumption of caffeine but too much could cause you problems. You must however remember that over indulging is a different story all together. Watch your caffeine intake. Keep from making these mistakes by using some self control and moderation.
