What Are the Biggest Champagne Houses?

By Nathan Hall

The history of champagne starts in France, in the region Champagne-Ardenne where hundreds of years ago the most important champagne brands came out. In this article, we are going to discuss about these famous champagne brands. First, we'll talk about the history of champagne and then we'll enumerate champagne brands from the less significant to the most expensive champagne.

The Benedictine Monks invented Champagne as we know it now, hundreds of years ago. The earliest records state that champagne was been invented in 1531 but only in 1662 did Christopher Merret documented the addition of sugar to a complete wine to produce a second fermentation and give birth to the famous methode Champenoise. For many years people believed champagne was first formulated by Dom Perignon (the Benedictine monk) but, although he claimed it 40 years later than Merret, Dom Perignon had a fundamental contribution to the evolution of champagne. Now, Dom Perignon is one of the top champagne brands founded by Moet & Chandon House in the inter-war age.

The greatest of the champagne brands that supplied Napoloen I was Moet and Chandon. Another supplier for the royal families was Louis Roederer, whose brand acquired champagne Cristal for the Russian Tsar. After it was sold for no less than $275,000 per bottle the Shipwrecked 1907 Piper-Heidsieck became the most expensive champagne in the world. Marilyn Monroe used to toast a glass of Heidsieck every time she got off from bed.Champagne Pommery is a less known brand but the critics appreciate it more than many other expensive brands of champagne on the market. Called the champagne of James Bond, Bollinger is shown in many scenes throughout the movies. Some other great champagne brands are: Veuve Clicquot, Pol Roger, Krug, Perrier-Jouet, Freixenet, Gosset, Duval Leroy, Taittinger, Mercier and more.

Although the traditional champagne is been produced in France exclusively, many other large brands make champagne all around the world. Prosecco is the famous Italian sparkling wine which is the best ingredient for a Bellini cocktail. In Spain, there is the well-known Cava, which is a sparkling wine made by the champagne method and produced mostly in Catalonia. The cheesiest and the poorest quality sparkling wine is the California Champagne, which is an artificial champagne.

Remember these champagne brands and you'll have an easy time selecting champagne types. This way it is smoother to determine which bottle to choose, whether it's the most inexpensive or the most expensive champagne in the shop. Let's drink a glass of champagne.
