Important Thing to Remember in a Food Dehydrator

By Katherine Thompson

A lot of people today still don't know what a food dehydrator is for. Food dehydrators have a simple function - to take the juice off food such as meats and fruits to preserve them.

For people who love dried fruits or beef jerky, you should know how expensive these are. Let me tell you that doing the dehydrating process by yourself allows you to save up to half the price per pound of these. Not only that, but doing the dehydrating process at home is safer since you know exactly the ingredients used on them plus you can control how much salt or sugar you use too.

A food dehydrator's power is measured in watts, just like bulbs. For comparison sake, imagine using a 100-watt bulb in a two thousand-square foot area. The brightness of the bulb wouldn't change per se, but it wouldn't be able to illuminate the whole place.

It's quite the same with a food dehydrator. A 500-watt power dehydrator is powerful but it wouldn't be enough to accommodate 20 trays of food at the same time. For food volumes such as these, it would be best to focus on smaller batches instead and do it with eight to ten trays at a time.

Also, remember not to mix food of different kids such as meats and fruits. Aside from having their tastes mixed together, they also have different dehydrating time. Mixing food of different kinds together may leave some under dehydrated and some over dehydrated. Under dehydrated foods may have traces of microorganisms in them which may cause upset stomach or food poisoning.

There are different types of food dehydrators to choose from, depending on your needs. When looking for one, it's best to look around first and read reviews from different people to know which model or brand is perfect for you.
