The Importance of Blending Wines

By Nia Lawrence

If you are a passionate wine collector or wine drinker, you must already have an idea of what wine blending is. This is when two different types of wine are mixed together in order to form a new drink, combining the elements of both wines. Red blends are one type of blending that mixes two or more grapes that are utilized to make red wines. Whether the blends have been passed on from different generations or they are fresh and new blends, the goal of blending remains the same. It is to add complexity, taste and flavour to the different types of wine in the market. With so many different kinds of wine available, there are so many different blending possibilities that can truly satisfy your palettes.

Blending two wines together also tries to minimize the tannin content in a wine so that it will result to a softer and lighter taste. It is usually recommended that the blend would be between a bold red wine and a lighter red wine so that they would complement each other perfectly. The blending would usually be between two red wines or two white wines. There are only a few blends that combine both the red and white wine in one drink. When you buy red blends, you would easily know it because it is indicated in the bottle. The labels usually tell you if a particular wine is a blend or not.

One common example of a grape that is always blended is Shiraz. This is a very good blending partner because when it is ripe, it has many flavour and texture options. This paves the way for various blending possibilities with the different wines from various regions. The wine is also very versatile that whenever it is blended with different types of wine, it would still retain a bit of its very distinct flavour and aroma.

If you're looking for a red wine blend, you should definitely check out Australia's most-loved Cabernet Shiraz blend. The mixture has the aroma of black currants, sweet fruits, tomatoes, spices and raspberries. This wine is dark red in colour and its flavour is that of black olives and black currant, with a bit of chocolate and coffee. This is a great combination since the high tannin levels of the Cabernet Sauvignon are complemented by the fruity and spicy flavours of the Shiraz. Since the tannin content is lesser in this blended mixture, it is easier to drink and the taste is lighter. Both wines are already great individually, but when they are blended together, the drink produced is totally refreshing and new. This mixture is not really popular in France but is the most popular red blend in Australia.

Blending is, indeed, a good way to bring and create new drinks in the market. It combines some of the best wines so you get the best of both worlds. If you're looking for a refreshing and delicious blend, the Cabernet Shiraz blend should be at the top of your list.
