Edible Holiday Cupcake Toppers

By Anya Shiela Richards

This year, rather than using non-edible ornaments to give a festive look to your Christmas cupcakes, why don't you try using decorations that you can eat? Edible cake toppers are available in many shapes, colors and flavors. They are just as wonderful to look at as the non-edible variety, giving any basic cupcake recipe definite holiday flair. To use them, simply make your cupcakes, add your favorite frosting and place the Christmas decorations on top. The frosting is important because it keeps the decorative toppers from sliding or falling off the cakes.

Edible cupcake toppers can be bought readymade or you can easily make them at home. Because sugar cubes may be tricky for you to shape, use royal icing to make these edible Christmas cake decorations. While the readymade ones are guaranteed to have a distinct taste, it is more fun making them yourself because you can experiment with different shapes, colors, even flavors. At the end of the cake decoration exercise, you will also have moved a notch higher in your cake making expertise. Again, when you choose to make the toppers yourself, there is room to invent as many different shapes as you like.

Edible Christmas motifs are usually in the form of sugar cubes. When buying them from the store, they will be already curved into fancy shapes and colored. If making them yourself, you will have to shape them yourself. There is no limit to what shapes you can use but being Christmas, it is more realistic to stick to traditional Christmas shapes - you can never go wrong with figurines such as Santa Claus, snowmen, Christmas trees, bells and candy canes. Use different colors, giving precedence to the traditional Christmas colors red, green and white. The color effect is achieved using food coloring and is hand painted onto the motifs to make them come alive.

Edible gold and silver glitter is a very popular edible cake decoration that is particularly suitable for Christmas cupcakes. What better way is there to make a star-shaped cupcake topper shimmer realistically than a generous spray of edible silver glitter? Equally good-looking, edible tiny gold or silver balls can be either purchased or made at home. To make them yourself, you need to make your icing firm enough to shape into balls easily. If you are not an expert at gauging the firmness of your icing, then you may be better off buying these delicate cake decorations.

The easiest edible Christmas toppers to make are candy sprinkles. They are made from hard sugar and can be shaped into canes, berries, snowflake sprinkles and holly. Other edible Christmas motifs you can get for as little as $1.50 are mitten cupcake toppers, gingerbread boy cupcake toppers - complete with eyes, noses and buttons, Christmas trees, snowman, stockings, Poinsettia and mitten/snowflake winter hat-scarf-shaped cupcake toppers. Some of these come in dozens or sets of two dozens, meaning a single order is enough to cover all your cupcakes. Of course, if you have made a higher quantity of cupcakes, you will need to buy more toppers.
