Spirits and Its Two Main Groups, How They Differ

What do we specifically expect in each group?

Discovering The Clear Spirits

There may be different flavors of clear spirits which solely depend on the food from which they were distilled.

* Gin is actually found to have two basic styles. The original Dutch jenevre (or genievre) is the distillate of malt spirits that include juniper berries. You may get London dry gin once the spirit is redistilled with juniper berries and with other flavors that come with aromatic botanicals.

* Distillation of molasses or sugar cane is where rum comes from. Initially, rum would come as clear spirits; however they aged in barrels which can turn them into rum golden, amber or very dark.

* When rice wine is being distilled it can create sake.

* While on the other hand, tequila comes from the distillation of the fruit of the blue agave plant. Similar to rum, tequila is also originally clear spirits however because of aging it would turn into golden or amber with aging.

* The neutral spirit is vodka. It is termed as this since it's totally clear and has no flavor or aroma. In order to match the color of the fruit juice however, you can see now that vodka may be mixed with flavor and while there are producers which even change the color.

Discovering the dark spirits

Except for brandy which is distilled from wine, dark spirits are those beverages that are distilled from grains. Mostly, these dark spirits are turned into golden amber by some coloring agents as they aged in barrels, but like the others, they were also clear spirits in origin.

* The distillation of wine or a mash of any fruit, grapes being the most common, is where brandy comes from.

* Distilled from grain is whiskey. Examples are rye, barley, corn, or wheat. You actually have two types of whiskey, the straight one made from the distillate produced by one operation of a still and added neutral spirits and the second is the blended whiskey that contains several straight whiskeys and added neutral spirits.

* Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey, come from the distillation of those made of 51% corn that can only be made in the USA.

* Canadian Whiskey comes most likely from a mix of grains, mainly corn and rye, wheat and barley.

* Another type which also comes from a mix of grains, but only dominated by barley, is the Irish whiskey.

* The scotch whiskey actually comes from a mix of grains that is primarily barley and other rains used in limited accounts. Generally, these grains include oats.

Spirits are composed of two main categories, namely, clear and dark sprits. Ranging from various colors are those dark spirits, which can be from amber to deep brown. Those clear spirits on the other hand are the ones which you can see through. It is the distillation process, which determines the appearance, taste, and smell of the product that makes both groups have different physical appearance.
