A Delicious Corn Fritter Recipe

By Kathy Smith

The term soul food originated in the 1960s. The origins associated with soul food, even so, are much older and may be traced to a time for Africa-and to a lesser degree, to Europe, at the same time. It began with the slave trade during the early 15th century, this diet of newly-enslaved Africans changed about the long journeys faraway from their homelands. It was during this time period that some of the native crops of Africa began showing up inside the Americas.

European enslavers given their captive staff as cheaply as you possibly can, often with leftover/waste meals from the plantation, pushing slaves to make do using the ingredients at hand. Within slave households, 'vegetables' contains the tops regarding turnips, beets, and dandelions. Soon, African-American slaves ended up cooking with brand-new types of "greens": kale, cress, mustard, collard greens and also pokeweed. They also developed tested recipes which used lard, cornmeal, and also offal; discarded cuts involving meat such as pigs' toes, oxtail, ham hocks, chitterlings/"chitlins" (pigs' small intestines), this halloween ears, hog jowls, tripe, and pores and skin. Cooks added don't forget the onions, garlic, thyme, and these kinds of leaf as flavor pills.

More and more soul foods of today identify and continues to operate feverishly to meet this challenge. This is exactly why you'll find more and more quality recipes shying away from the traditional fat-laden tested recipes and adopting brighter ingredient recipes. Amazingly the taste doesn't get diminished.

Lots of the changes that's happening is to substitute the original heavy ingredients together with lighter ones. For instance, animal fats including ham hocks, fat rear and bacon is actually replaced by low-fat smoked turkey, poultry ham or poultry bacon. Cooking techniques also have gone healthier. For instance, less deep excess fat frying and more pot frying, baking along with grilling is recommended in lots of soul food quality recipes now.
