Ingesting Reasonable Quantities Of Red Wine Enhances Your Well-Being

By Harry Carmichael

Latest research is certainly good for those who enjoy that glass of red wine when eating dinner or perhaps later in the evening, armed with a fine cabernet , reflecting on the day as you sit in the warmth of the open fireplace. The next time you do this, you can start reflecting on the benefits to your health.

Throughout the ages, wine has been used for its medicinal qualities, treating labour pains to using it as a topical antiseptic. Now, as science and technology advance, we are finding out so much more about the value of wine to our health.

In the fight against cancer - Red wine contains resveratrol, a naturally occurring anti-fungicide found in the skins of red grapes. This acts as an antioxidant in the body, suppressing free radicals and thereby reducing the aging and potentially cancer-causing damage to DNA cells. Drinking a moderate amount of red wine has been shown to reduce the incidence of both lung and prostate cancer. In fact, drinking a glass of red wine a day may cut a man's risk of prostate cancer in half.

Healthy Heart- Reveratrol has been given to rats and mice to check the effects and the result are encouraging. It was found that there was a substantial decrease in the arteries plaque count and blood clots. Known as the "French Paradox", the low death rates from heart disease among the French along with their rich and fatty diet has long puzzled scientists. However, the French culture of red wine with meals may be the clue.
Losing Weight- Mice again get the Reveratrol jab and this time it is discovered that resveratrol has fat fighting properties, preventing pre-fat cells from maturing. The research is on-going so don't start ordering three pizzas and a bottle of red vino just yet.

Diabetes- There are ingredients in wine that appear to control or even prevent diabetes, The discovery results are relatively young and in need of more investigation as controversy exists over this claim. However, the signs are there that a glass a day of red wine seems to regulate blood levels

Sex - One or two glasses of red wine a day can increase a woman's sexual desire, perhaps by increasing the blood flow to the sexual organs. The study was done on women who were teetotal, those who drank red wine and those who drank a different alcoholic beverage. Women who drank more than 2 glasses of alcohol per day were excluded from the study as drunkenness might then be the reason for their increased libido. The moderate red wine drinkers were found to come out tops on sexual activity.

Sleep - Melatonin, the hormone that prompts us to go to sleep, is abundant in the skins of red grapes. The best wines to drink for this great sleep aid are Merlot, Chianti and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Common Cold- Keep away the dreads of the common cold with a moderate intake of wine. Research has shown that the flavonoids of red wine carry with them anti-viral properties or anti-inflammatory aspects in the wine will keep that cold at bay.

Cholesterol - A chemical found in red wine, known as saponin, is thought to have the effect of lowering cholesterol. It seems that these chemicals block the absorption in the body of cholesterol. The research into this is on-going.

The Brain - Scientists have discovered that a large daily intake of red wine (experiment done on rats), does not damage the brain in the way that other alcoholic drinks can. It is believed the antioxidants in red wine protect the brain from the damaging effects of alcohol. While it is not recommended that humans ever drink vast quantities of any alcohol, the study does prove the beneficial effects of the antioxidants contained in red wine.

Be Cautious: Any health benefits derived from red wine is from a moderate consumption of the drink. Doctors suggest that 150ml or 5 ounces of red wine is fine for women on a daily basis and twice that for men.

A tip for you: Sip the red wine to maximise the health benefits of red wine. Drink it too quickly and the resveratrol is absorbed through the gut which is not as effective. Slow, lingering sips allow the lining of the mouth to absorb the resveratrol which is way more effectiv
