Grape Varieties Used To Create Wine

By Maricor Diehl

When people think of grapes, the thought of wine is never far behind. This is because wine making generally involve grapes. Wine has been around for a long time and is probably the most loved alcoholic drink.

Superior red wine is made from Shiraz or Syrah grapes, a variety of select grapes grown worldwide. As grapes may vary from region to region, so can the types of wine derived from these grapes differ in color and quality.

Unknown to many, fresh fruits of the garden variety can also be used to make wine other than grapes. These include apricots, berries, pears, etc. But grapes have been the fruit of choice by most wine makers. This is because grapes can be processed to wine without extra sugar or much additives during fermentation.

Yeast converts sugar to ethanol which gives wine its alcohol content. Grapes have high sugar content and yeast is added to change it to wine.

Mature grapes are not readily turned to wine. Ripe Syrah grapes are checked for the correct sugar content. They are tasted and tested to ensure a higher quality wine is produced. Once done, they are picked and wine brewery ensues.

The pigment on the skin of the ripe Shiraz grapes gives its wine the rich red color. The grapes are pressed with the skin and seeds intact. Extracting the juice from the gathered grapes is the next step in wine making.

After going through the press, the juice combined with yeast is allowed to mellow in vats. Manufacturers then put it in oak barrels for some more time. They use expensive oak barrels because these give more flavor to the wine. If white wine is needed, the skin and seeds are extracted before going through the wine press.

The final step in wine making is to transfer the fermented grape extract to bottles. Choice wine is given more time to mature at this stage. Lastly, they are packaged and stamped and sold in markets worldwide.
