Go Vegetarian One Recipe at a Time

By Julia Noone

If you have a good vegetarian recipe it can actually change your life. It can be the meal that makes you realise just how easy being a vegetarian can be and just how tasty the food can be. It can open up your mind and lead to a healthier way of eating and thinking. A good vegetarian recipe can inspire you and delight you.

There are many reasons I would like to give up meat. Firstly the obvious ethical issue of using animals for food plays on my mind a lot. I would not like to be a farm animal in this world, so feel pretty guilty about eating meat most of the time.

I have also thought about other factors such as expense. Meat has become an expensive ingredient to any meal. I also believe that we live in an ever changeable world with many and varied cultural influences on our shopping habits and menus. I feel in order for me and my family to truly appreciate this new world and open our senses we should start with exploring a new way of eating. To introduce the concept of vegetarianism I need a gateway recipe.

For me the problem is not really a lack of choice rather too much choice. Who do I start with Nigella or Jamie? I do not have a lot of spare time and really cannot to waste money on food that me and my family do not enjoy and end up putting in the bin.

My gateway vegetarian recipe needs to be quick, simple, tasty, relatively cheap and not involve any ingredients I cannot simply pick up at my local supermarket. I am already snacking on vegetarian treats, now all I need to do is to take the next step. Instead of cheese on toast with red peppers and onion I need to turn it into a veggie bake with a cheese topping and add a jacket potato, perhaps I am closer to my gateway veggie recipe than I realise.
