Crystal Champagne

By Mon Amou

Cool. Classy. Sophisticated. Cristal Champagne makes any occasion more than special. That's because Louis Roederer Cristal is more than a champagne, it's the drink of everyone who is anyone from royalty to rappers. Created for an emperor, Russian Tsar Alexander II, Cristal has a dry, distinctive taste deriving from an equal mix of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

The Tsar so feared assassination that he asked Roederer to bring him champagne in a clear bottle to make detecting any bomb inside easier than peering through the thick, green glass of more ordinary champagne bottles. To the Tsar's satisfaction, Roederer commissioned the Cristal clear bottle with a flat bottom and distinctive cellophane wrapping that cut out the light to keep the wine inside fresh and strong.

Cristal Champagne is a full-bodied, sparkling brut that improves with age - the problem is keeping hold of a bottle for long enough to let the wine mature. Some believe Cristal flatters to deceive, but rest assured a champagne with such a distinguished and distinctive history is the culmination of centuries of love, skill and experience.
