Why is French Wine so Famous?

By Harvey Powers

Most of us have been told at some point when we buy red wine or even white wine that the French make the best varieties. But why are the French so famous for their vintages? Well, to understand this, you will need to go beyond the labels and bottles on the shelves and look at things from a slightly different viewpoint.

One of the things you need to first understand before buying is that your selection is coming from a country that has maintained the same wine making skills for centuries now. This means that all the elements that go into making a wine is going to be the same as it was hundreds of years ago. This dedication to customs is the reasons why there is consistently delicious wine being produced and shipped out on the market.

Of course, the government does have some say in this matter as well. You are going to find that vineyards in France are specifically told what types of grapes they can grow by the French government. If the style of grape they grow has not been approved, there is a potential that the government can cease the growing of the grape that is being used.

The regulations that are in place for wine are heavily monitored. This includes everything from the cultivation methods that are used to the way the grapes are pruned. This is done in an effort to help preserve the quality of wine that is produced in France. This ensures that the flavour remains strong and in full force.

When you buy red wine, you are going to find that different regions are going to have a bearing on the quality of the wine. For example, the most proficient area for red wine is Bordeaux. The vintages that come from here include Merlot as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The high quality grapes for these wines largely come from France and in turn are directly responsible for the different options they will have.

What you are going to find is that white wine is just as famous in the French culture as red is. In fact, for hundreds of years wine has been a main staple of the culture and this is one of the reasons that the reach of this famous element has spread across the world.

In fact, when you think about it, the robust flavours that come from the grapes they grow and a proven approach to winemaking help the French wine to remain the most popular type of wine that you are going to find available on the market. These go from the Riesling from eastern France to the classic Chardonnay. This could be one of the reasons why so many people tend to seek it out and no matter if you are looking to buy red or white, there will be no denying that by choosing a French vintage, you are ensuring that you are serving some of the best wines there are.
