The Truth about Rose Wines

By Nia Lawrence

Rose wine is basically a kind of wine that is produced from an "unfinished red wine". It is a different sort of wine that combines all the refreshing qualities of a white and some properties of a red. The different grape varietals from many wine regions like Southern France, Spain, California or Italy are basically used to form this kind of wine. Roses can either be sweet or dry, dark and light, just like the red and white wines.

The process involved in making red wine is actually the same process involved in making rose. The difference is that the process is not completed. The grape varietals used in making it are exactly the same with the ones used in making red wines. The grapes are squeezed or pressed and the skins of the grapes remain in the juice during the fermentation. Once the color and some characteristics of the red wine are achieved, the process is stopped. It is during this point when the fermentation process done to a white wine begins.

Because of their delicious character, pink wines are used by many people when they cook certain dishes. Apart from being a perfect partner to red meat dishes, red wines are also used in cooking tomato-based and beef dishes. A rose wine, on the other hand, makes pork and chicken dishes more mouthwatering. For pork and chicken dishes to really ooze with flavor, chefs advise that the meat be marinated in rose for several hours. It is also recommended that rosemary, garlic, oregano and thyme be added to the marinade, because these herbs are perfect in highlighting the fruity taste of the rose. After some hours of marinating, the chicken or pork dish can already be cooked. But the cooking process should make use of low fire. Slow cooking allows the best qualities of the wine to mix well with the dish.

According to medical studies, resveratrol is a good antioxidant and can help prevent certain diseases like cancer. Although it's true that red wines have the highest amount of resveratrol among all the wines, this doesn't mean that a rose wine doesn't have it. It must be remembered that rose is partly made of red wine. Thus, it also contains resveratrol, only in moderate level though.

Wines have always been a part of social gatherings since Biblical times. While it is primarily an alcoholic beverage, their use has expanded because of the recent scientific studies and the creativity of the chefs. There is no denying that wines, including rose, have provided people benefits in more ways than one.
