Lower Fat Soul Food Cooking

Soul food is a derivation of southern cooking and it's commonly mentioned that this type of southern cuisine has the honor of being one the most popular cuisines to come exclusively in the South. For example, Natchitoches, Louisiana, is renowned for its meat pies. Whe soul food was just getting started girls learned to make conventionaltraditional foods like fufu, which is created with veggies and pounded yams. Typical soul food dinners are black-eyed peas, sweet carrots, hoe cakes and oxtails, among others. One of the most delicious soul food dishes is Southern style Baby Back Ribs. The best kitchenware for cooking soul food dishes are heavy pots and seasoned cast iron skillets. Most of the most popular hip hop soul food meals include chicken, black beans, white rice and seafood.

Furthermore, old-fashioned soul food dishes frequently include collard greens, black-eyed peas and other home grown vegetables. Some other Southern staples, like grits, are found in numerous recipes. I use salt sparingly only if needed generally in most of my soul food recipes.


When you think of soul food dishes what immediately comes to mind is seasonings. There's no way around that. Yet today's seasonings have gone from standard fatback, ham hocks and highamounts of salt. Today more natural and healthy seasonings contain garlic powder, onion powder, apple cider vinegar, tumeric, rosemary and along with other natural seasonings, as an example. Moreover, collard greens, black eye peas, and butter or lima beans seasoned with fat-free smoked turkey meat takes the place of ham hocks, fatback and bacon. Traditional southern cooking represented not merely rich meals but rich and unhealthy cooking practices like deep frying. Frying was a popular cooking method for soul food meals among African American slaves. You might be noted for your ability to be able to "burn" soul food dinners, but your health doesn't have to go down in the flames, too. Nowadays, you can pan-fry or saute ingredients for a much healthier meal.

Classic soul food dishes always used ingredients such as grease, sodium, corn syrups and high calories. Soul foods are typically high in fat, like fatback and ham used as backbones for flavoring southern food dishes, that increases the risk for developing obesity. Other favorite dishes tend to be centered around one main and harmful ingredient: fried gizzards. Tasty, but not healthy.
