Embracing Vegetarianism

By Tiffany Nash

More and more people are becoming vegetarians. Vegetarians can become so due to health issues, animal rights issues, or dislike of meat. Semi vegetarians are one of the types of vegetarians, and they consume only small amounts of meat and other animal products. This type of vegetarians usually eat this way because of a health problem such as high blood pressure, obesity or heart disease. The lacto-ovo vegetarian, which is the most common type of vegetarian in Western cultures, don't eat any meat, but eat eggs and dairy products.

Lacto vegetarians eat dairy but not eggs. The vegan is the most extreme type of vegetarian. This type of vegetarian doesn't include any type of animal products in their diet, including honey and gelatin. They often avoid wearing clothing made out of leather or wool and only use products which are not tested on animals. Most vegans become vegetarians because of issues concerning animal rights. Some vegetarians will only eat white meats, such as chicken or fish, or will only eat meat that is labelled free range, which indicates that the animals were not raised under cruel conditions.

Many meat-eaters can't understand how not eating meat can be healthy. The truth is that vegetarians tend to be a lot healthier than meat eaters. Statistics show that vegetarians are three times less likely to develop heart disease or breast cancer as compared to meat eaters. Meat eaters are also 400% more likely to develop colon cancer. Eating too much meat can cause obesity and excess weight. Vegetarians can live about 6 years longer than meat eaters on average.

If you've just decided to become a vegetarian, make sure you eat the right foods to maintain your health. A healthy vegetarian doesn't survive off of white bread and pasta alone. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain pastas, breads, and rice, beans, legumes, soy proteins, tofu, and nuts. You can get calcium from soy milk, tofu, spinach, kale, and other veggies. If you are still eating dairy products and eggs, make sure you are consuming them in healthy amounts.

Your health will improve a lot if you go vegetarian. You can get plenty of information about vegetarianism online.
