Are there Any Health Benefits for Drinking Coffee?

By Ray Marsh

A great number of studies have focused on the health benefits of drinking coffee. Drinking coffee late at night can have a negative impact on your quality of sleep.

For many people, the first noticeable effect of drinking coffee is an increase in short term memory. There is an element in coffee beans that actually works to stimulate memory. This knowledge is particularly useful for students preparing for exams.

Studies have also shown that students who consume moderate amounts of coffee had higher test scores than those who do not drink coffee. Among those over the age of 80, studies have shown that drinking coffee can lead to improved cognitive memory functions. Drinking coffee can actually lower the risks of dementia and Alzheimer's disease too. Drinking coffee has also been linked to a reduction in the risk of developing gout in men. Gout can be painful and is commonly heralded by painful inflammation and swelling in the joints. Gout is often considered a condition of the big toe but the truth is it can effect the ankles, legs, arms, and fingers as well. This kind of inflammatory arthritis makes the joint seem hot and tender and can often appear as red and swollen. In addition to causing gout, a high level of uric acid in the body may also cause kidney stones. According to research, the uric acid levels in the body are reduced by drinking coffee.

Caffeine is thought to increase the risk of a person developing high blood pressure, despite no actual studies verifying this fact to date. As coffee is a stimulant, some people have been known to feel anxious or irritable after drinking too much coffee. Some people have trouble resisting stress after drinking coffee. Stress and anxiety are suddenly felt over little things that normally wouldn't bother people. Some of the symptoms may be higher than normal blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and a rapid heart rate. Heavy coffee drinkers are especially likely to experience this.

In conclusion, drinking coffee in smaller amounts might be advantageous to your health. However, people that drink a lot of coffee should also understand that there are negative health risks that can develop from drinking a lot of caffeine. Moderation is the secret to getting a healthy balance.
