Grill Pans

By Zoe Baldwin

When it comes to cooking at home, many of us like to opt for the healthy alternative of grilling our food. Although many ovens come with a built in grill, many people still like the tactile sensation of using a pan when cooking and therefore in recent years many leading brands have developed a range of grill pans to satisfy this gap in the market. Commonly known as a grill pan or griddle pan, this item allows the user to grill food on a stove top in a similar way to frying food.

A stock standard grill pan is very basic and design and is usually of a square design which resembles a frying pan, but instead of having a flat base the base is lined with a range of lines, designed to give your meat or other items a char grilled look. These grill lines help to drain the fat away from your food keeping it relatively healthy as well as leaving it with a lovely brown/charcoal colour.

When it comes to using a grill pan there are a wide range of cooking options that are available to you. Aside from your traditional meats you are also able to grill a range of other foods including the searing of fish which gives you a healthy approach to almost any type of food. For people who prefer unbuttered fish this is a quick and effective way of helping to lock the flavour into your cuts.

Along with many other dishes that would commonly be found in a frying pan, tortas and pikelets are just a few examples of food that use grill pans to present a healthy alternative. This in turn helps to take some of the unhealthiness out of frying foods.

When it comes to making a grill pan it's important to use a good, sturdy material which enables even heat distribution throughout, and for this reason most pans use a combination of stainless steel and cast iron. These materials allow for an easy absorption of heat and an even spread right throughout the base of the pan to enable a thorough cooking.
