Thoughtful Gifts For Hospital Patients

By Anya Shiela Richards

When visiting a friend or loved one who is in hospital, you want to provide them with some measure of comfort. For most of us, this means taking them a gift that will make their hospital stay easier to bear and help to raise their morale. The gift should be useful, practical - and appropriate to their state of health. Deciding on the perfect gift is not easy, and we are always afraid of embarrassing ourselves by choosing something tactless or unsuitable.

The list below provides ideas for thoughtful, heart-felt gifts you could give to hospital patients:

- Hospital food is notoriously Spartan, and many patients will tell you that while they were stuck in a hospital bed they were starving hungry. This is extremely true of women who have just had babies. Now that you are "eating for two," you are very hungry, and hospital food is never enough. So unless your friend's eating has been restricted for medical reasons, how about bringing a treat?
Homemade treats are more thoughtful, and usually healthier, than an expensive box of chocolate or candy. A great idea would be to bake a batch of cupcakes for the patient. Using colorful cupcake papers and arranging the fresh, homemade cakes in a pretty basket will make your gift a bright, cheerful one. If you have the time, personalize the cupcakes using any of the numerous simple cupcake decorating ideas available in cookbooks and online.

- Reading material (magazines as well as a humorous novel or two) and crossword or number puzzles will work wonders to chase away the boredom that many hospital patients suffer from. Choose reading material and puzzles that you know your friend likes and, again, make sure that he or she is well enough to enjoy this kind of gift. This gift is great for a patient who is bed-ridden but alert, but it certainly isn't appropriate for someone who is groggy or who suffers from constant headaches, for instance.

- A selection of the newspapers and magazines for that particular week. There is nothing more boring than being stuck in a hospital bed, especially if you are not mobile. In fact, apart from these publications, you can also cheer up your friend by bringing them a selection of books to keep them going while they are still in the hospital.

- Depending on how long the other person is going to be in the hospital, you may want to make a photograph album of all of the loved people in their life to cheer them up. Whether the pictures are of you and your children, their children, or other people that they care about, this kind of gift is always a winner.

- Depending on the patient's condition, lending them a laptop or an iphone could be an ideal get-well gift. Persons hospitalized with a broken leg, for instance, will be overjoyed with this type of gift, which will help to pass the time.

To show how much you care for your sick friend, use one of the gift ideas listed above. The value of a get-well gift is not measured in dollars; what matters is the thought behind the gift and the comfort it b
